Things to Learn About Magic

During the past week, I had the opportunity to enjoy a workshop on magic and media, tutored by Welsh magician/academic Stuart Nolan. We talked quite a bit about games and play, and the general theme was how to apply techniques used by magicians to software and game design. The week more or less validated some of my thoughts on specific figures of game rhetoric that are used by magicians, such as revealment & concealment, and (mis)direction.

We also did some exercises with Lego, based on the Lego Serious Play methods - interesting stuff. Stuart is writing a book on magic and media, and I’m certainly looking forward to it. He even taught us some actual tricks. I can now do a modest cup & ball routine :)

Three chapters still in the works… I’ve had to do some restructuring which is frustratingly slow. They will be online early September at the latest.
